What is PMA?
Parts Manufacturer Approval (PMA) is an FAA authorization allowing manufacturers to produce replacement parts for aircraft. Similar to the European Part Approval (EPA) by EASA, PMA involves rigorous approval methods to ensure safety and quality. Parts can be approved through three methods: Identicality, where the part is identical to the original; Identicality by Licensure, where parts are certified through a Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) or with a license from the Original Approval Holder; and Test & Computation, where parts are analyzed to be as good as or better than the original. PMA holders must demonstrate to the FAA that their quality systems meet strict requirements, ensuring each part aligns with the approved design standards.
